SAN DIEGO — A San Diego resident is only the third person in the nation to be legally identified as non-binary.
A judge on Friday granted Arata Tiffany Furuya’s request to identify as neither male nor female, San Diego’s ABC 10 News, reports.
“I’m not like half man, half woman. I just don’t have a gender identity,” Furuya tells the ABC affiliate.
San Diego LGBT Community Center and Transgender Law Center, helped Furuya file documents with the court.
Furuya tells the TV station that the next step is to change their driver’s license and Social Security card.
Furuya’s actions come less than a month after SB 179 was introduced in the California legislature. If passed, the bill would streamline the process for Californians to change their legal gender to non-binary.
