LONG BEACH — Music fans will feel for the Queen of Funk when Chaka Khan performs at Long Beach Pride this year.
The 64-year-old singer, who was ranked 17th on VH-1’s “100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll,” will headline the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival on May 20, Long Beach Pride announced on social media. A festival headliner for May 21 has not yet been announced.
Long Beach Pride already has announced that singer Ty Herndon will headline the country stage on May 20.
Long Beach Pride is the city’s second largest event and party along the waterfront.
Khan, a Chicago native who was born Yvette Marie Stevens, is a 10-time Grammy Award winner who has sold an estimated 70 million albums worldwide. In 1984, Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper on the hit single “I Feel for You.”
In the 1970s, Khan was the frontwoman of the funk band Rufus.
In December, Billboard magazine ranked Khan as the 65th most successful dance artist of all-time.
The two-day pride festival will take place along Shoreline Drive at Marina Green and Rainbow Lagoon parks in downtown.
The Long Beach Pride Parade takes place May 21 at 10:30 a.m., stepping off at Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue and marching west to Alamitos Avenue.
