Actress Ruby Rose will play lesbian superhero Batwoman for The CW, according to various media reports, including Variety.

Rose is best known as Stella Carlin on Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black.” She also stars in the upcoming shark thriller “The Meg.”

The CW announced last month that a “Batwoman” series is in development, but it hasn’t been picked up by the network.

‘Supergirl’ transgender superhero is historic TV first

Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman, will be introduced in the network’s annual DC crossover event fall that features characters from “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Supergirl.”

The new series, if picked up, will be the first time an LGBTQ superhero will be the lead in a television series. It’s still not clear if Kane’s longtime partner, Renee Montoya, who is also a police detective, will be featured in the series.

The upcoming series will be written by Caroline Dries of “The Vampire Diaries.” she will also be executive producing with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns.
